Compulsory Questions
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Titles
While researching film openings we looked at different openings like Donny Darko, Dexter, Six Feet Under, City of God, Cold Mountain and many others. We also looked at past candidates work piece like El embro Angelico. Ashley and I got the fading idea of clips from City Of God because at the start of it there are black fades that are used at the beginning of the knife..
The different clips I watched had different titles.some used a lot of titles which made it slower to start while some used very short titles which meant the film started quicker and went straight into it the point and ones with the most credits felt like the film was unrushed and took its time to start
A clip that took its time to start and had lots of credits was six feet under
it was a total of 1 minute 40 seconds
the opening titles seemed long and it used lots moving images which related to death because we saw bodies being cleaned and being prepared for burials. The soundtrack of it also seemed slow and like it was taking its time but it felt relaxed and calm.
A clip that had fast opening credits was City Of God.
there was hardly any opening titles it was as if it just went straight into the storyline with no hesitation. It seemed fast but it didn't feel rushed. It went at a good pace
Our movie had slow credits because there were a lot of credits but it went with a fast upbeat soundtrack so it did not seem as slow and dragged on.
our titles were colourful and they were placed behind a black screen and at the bottom right.
Mise en scene elements
Mise en scene in movies is used to show where, when and who the movie is about. It informs the audience what the movie is about and makes them interested in it. It lets the audience know the essential background elements where the narrative of the film emerges from.
In the movie cold mountain, the mise en scene is showed by using text on screen at the start of the movie to show when and where the movie was being taken place, we thought this was a good idea because it makes the audience understand but we did not use this because we thought the narrative was self explanatory
Key Characters
Introduction of key characters in a movie is very import and it allows the audience to identify who is going to be the main character and who the movie is going to be about and who the storyline is going to revolve around.
In Donny Darko, there is an introduction of his family around the dinner table, they get introduced at the start of the movie and the way that they are speaking makes it clear to us that they are a dis-functional family> In our movie we wanted to introduce our key characters in the start of the movie and we wanted to introduce their relationship. We got the young footballer to play in the gymnasium where the the football scout would then enter and tell him that he wants him to come try out for Hull City. There is where their relationship starts.
Establishment Of Relationships
It is important that relationships are shown in a movie so that we fully understand it and know what is going on and to make it clear as to whether the relationships develop and whether it is a strong relationship between each other or whether it is a weak one where they are nothing but acquaintances to each other. In the movie cold mountain it clear that a soldier has a strong relationship with a woman because he is reading a letter from a lady and it is emotional so it suggests that she is the love of his life and their relationship is strong. In our movie, it is clear that Kofie(the young footballer) and Gideon Seglah(the football scout) do not really have a relationship because Kofie asks "who are you". but they then begin to have a relationship later because the football scout tells him to meet him.
Use Of Music To Create Mood
The music played in a movie is important because it helps create the mood for the audience. My movie has a soundtrack playing throughout and it is fat and upbeat with lots of drums and it helps the audience know that it is not a relaxed slow movie, it is one that has lots of action in it.
one of the pieces we looked at was dexter's morning routine and the music used in it helped to create a mood for us. It seemed spooky and mysterious and the pictures on screen were adding to the mystery, and the way he was cutting up the orange and the way the ketchup was dripping on the plate like blood made it more gruesome and disgusting. he seemed like a serial killer.
